This week Garden County seniors took part in their 2nd Off-the-Page lesson for the year. Once again the lesson focused on local history, specifically on the historical markers in our area. We made a stop at the Windlass Hill marker and reconstructed sod house. Students learned about the history of sod houses, how they were constructed, and what it was like to live in one. After that students stopped by the Battle of Blue Water historical marker and learned about how that event impacted western history. All in all, the lesson gave students a better understanding of our local history and the major events in our past.

Please note that this is now a live calendar and things will be added and edited periodically so please check back often. If you are a google calendar user you can add these events to your calendar.
On Friday, September 14th, all 8th graders were trained in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). According to the American Heart Association, "CPR, if administered immediately after cardiac arrest can double or triple a person's chance of survival. About 90 percent of people who experience an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest die." 8th Civics students are participating in activities throughout the year that encourages engagement with the community and to become more involved citizens.

What is "alternative education?" An alternative school is one that offers the same basic curriculum as the "traditional" school but uses alternative delivery methods. While the structure of the alternative program may vary from site to site, there are common effective characteristics which have been identified in alternative schools: Small class size, supportive environment, autonomy and democratic structure, accountability and constant evaluations, opportunities for community involvement and a school environment.   more
