Third and Fourth graders who met their AR (Accelerated Reading) goals, were able to attend an amazing tour at Pollard's Dog Farm. Students learned how each dog is cared for and fed on an individual basis. The females are trained to jump into the top kennels to eat, while the males feast on the bottom row. Puppies remain with their litter until they are approximately 9 months old and don't leave the farm until they are about 16-18 months old. Larry and family transport the dogs to their trainers, where they are leased to several different spots in the US. The dogs are HIGHLY active, but very friendly and love people. They are muzzle the dogs at around 9 months. This isn't because they are mean, but because they play and can be rough with one another. Many of the kids raced the dogs, as they are natural born chasers. Students ran along the runs in the grass, trying to beat the fast dogs.  The group was also able to take a walking tour to view some goat like animals originating in Afghanistan, mule deer, and elk. It was another great adventure, exploring a unique business right here at home in Garden County. Thank you to the Pollard family for sharing your time and expertise with inquisitive young children. We hope this will someday encourage them to be entrepreneurs in our county!
