As we say goodbye to 2015, we are often compelled to make New Year’s resolutions. The author (Brook Wise) suggests that 2016 be a year of ‘discomfort’.

While Ms. Wise’s article is framed about relationships, she reminded us to leave our comfort zones. She urges us to challenge ourselves to change old ways of thinking and patterns of behavior. TAKE A RISK! It is through failing we learn. Stretching ourselves often leads to growth.

The old saying, “live and learn” has never rung more true! Neil Gaiman stated, “I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re DOING SOMETHING! So that’s my wish for you and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody’s ever made before. Don’t freeze, don’t stop, don’t worry that it isn’t good enough or it isn’t perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life. Whatever it is you’re scared of doing, Do it. Make your mistakes, next year and forever.”

So, get yourself ‘uncomfortable in 2016’. Sounds terrible, or terribly rewarding! Whatever happens, may the power of being uncomfortable provide you with growth in this new year. May you take a risk and realize you were better for it!
