This past week, Garden County lost a dear and gentle soul: Rex Beam. When we think of Rex, nearly everyone recalls that he almost always had a smile on his face! When searching for fitting quotes that reminded me of Rex, all three of these from Mother Teresa caught my eye. They exemplify that though a humble man, he had profound impact on others in so many ways. His demeanor was most generally quiet and unassuming, but his presence always felt.

“Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person,

a beautiful thing.”
Mother Teresa

Rex’s actions were always selfless and thoughtful of others. He eagerly sought ways to help others on the job and in his personal/civic/church life. Rex was actively involved in Volunteers of America Western NE events, many Lewellen activities, church responsibilities, the Masonic Lodge, and likely others I am unaware of. He walked the talk of modeling kindness to all he encountered.

All of us at Garden County Schools and countless others will greatly miss Rex’s dry sense of humor, warm chuckle, genuine smile, adages, quips, and wonderful stories. His legacy of service and compassion will ever remain in our hearts and hallways. Thank you for your dedication and service to others, Rex. You will indeed be missed, but never forgotten.

“Peace begins with a smile…”
Mother Teresa
