"MySpace" Problems

Parents and students should be aware that Nebraska's LB 205, approved by Governor Dave Heineman February 7, 2008, instructs schools to provide for a bullying policy that addresses "any ongoing pattern of physical, verbal, or electronic abuse on schools grounds..." 21st Century bullying can, and often does, include threats, disrespectful postings, and harassment via e-mail, blogging, or through various online social networks such as MySpace, FaceBook, or Xanga.
Although Garden County Schools filters such social networks, many students have access to these web sites at home. Parents need to be aware that these sites are not monitored. Photographs, documents, and even videos can be posted without site approval. If any of the material posted on these sites was obtained through school access or during the school day, the district can and is required to take action. Incriminating photographs can even be used when investigating student violations of athletic policies.
The best defense against such cyber bullying is parental awareness. Monitor your child's online activity. Filter and/or limit your child's Internet access. Talk with your child about online etiquette and digital citizenship. For more information about cyber safety and tips to keep your children safe online, visit http://www.kids.gov/.
